Two examples of Holden being hypocritical are when he says that he absolutely hates Sally Hayes but he asks her to a movie, and in the course of the evening he wants to run away with her and marry her. Even he, himself says that he can't stand her, yet he wants to marry her?
Often times when Holden goes into bars he tells the waiter to give someone a message or ask them a question. He says that "people never give anyone your message." But, He never answers anyone questions either. When Stradlater asked him repeatedly to borrow his houndstooth jacket, he wouldn't answer. And when Stradlater asked Holden to write his paper for him, he also wouldn't give him a specific answer. He just left Stradlater wondering.
One example of Holden being hypocritical is when he is talking to Mr. Spencer. He is acting really nice to him and acting like he wants to talk to him, when really he just wants to get out of there as fast as he can. Another example is when he tells Sally he wants them to run away and get married. He tells her this ridiculous story of the plans he has for them. He really hates Sally and can hardly stand to be around her.
