Ok--so let's talk about phonies. What are phonies? Do you know some? Are you one? Talk about an experience you've had with a phony--or a time when you've had to be one.
Phonies are, in my opinion, fakes and hypocrites. I know some hypocrites. I am normally not very hypocritical but there are instances where I have been hypocritical. One instance where I was hypocritical was when I made fun of people going to morning shooting practices for basketball and then I went to a few of them.
A phony is someone who acts certain ways around certain people. They are kind of like a hypocrite. There are definitely all kinds of phonies around me. Yes, there have been some times when I have been phony. No one acts the same around their grandparents as they do with their close friends. One instant I had with a phony was when someone told me they were my friend, but then they went and talked about me behind my back and didn’t act like very much of a friend.
I think that a phony is a person that is fake, or two-faced. There are a lot of phonies around me, especially at school. There have been a few times when I've been a phony, but most of the time I felt bad about it. The time I remember most about phonies, is when my best friend told lies about me to their family, just so they seemed like a better person than I was.
I think that everyone has to be a phony at least once. But, to be classified as a phony is different. A phony is someone who is constantly fake (not themselves, constantly trying to be something they're not to try to fit in or in some cases stand out) and/or someone that constantly lies to people. There are a few people in my family that are constantly phonies. They are always trying to put on an act to bring attention to themselves and to make people listen to what they're saying and completely ignore everyone else.
Phonies. What makes a phony? I think it's something that no one could know about others, and will always know about themselves. It's true that its almost impossible to not be phony. To be phony, I think, means to lie to yourself or others about SOMETHING. Doesn't matter what it is. Or perhaps holding back a part of yourself from everyone else, or hiding your true self behind a wall, like Holden did.
I'll be honest and say I've been "phony" with my grandparents because they want to see so much in me that I'm not. I just don't be all of myself around them for fear that I'll scared them away.
And sure, I've had encounters with "phonies" before, I just sort of ignored them when I realized it, of course. I guess I just don't like the fact that it was so easy to tell they were lying to me. I don't like lying, at all.
